ALTA 1.4104 Stainless Steel Specification

Steel properties

ALTA 1.4104 steel has moderate strength and corrosion resistance, and compared to other 17% Chromium martensitic stainless steels, 1.4104 steel's corrosion resistance is weaker due to the addition of sulfur.

 

The added sulfur gives 1.4104 stainless steel an excellent machinability and a finely ground surface, and it can be used for structural parts in water and steam applications.

Applications

² Automatic lathe parts: such as bolts, nuts and other fasteners processed in large quantities

² Mechanical parts: especially in environments that require high precision and high efficiency processing

² Pumps and pump shafts, valves, piston rods

IM/EAF + LF + VD + (ESR)

 

Hardness :

Max 220 HB (annealed),  QT650 (Rm. 650 – 850 Mpa)

Reduction ratio :

5 : 1 minimum or required

Grain size :

≥ 5.0 per ASTM E112

Non-metallic inclusion :

≤ 1.0 (thick), ≤ 1.5 (thin) per ASTM E45 method A (more pure by ESR route)

Ultrasonic Test

SEP1921, EN 10308, ASTM A388 or agreed methods
